2008 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg Grand Cru

$1,099.96

Producer note: Anne Gros, who is very proud of her new winery in the Minervois (Languedoc-Roussillon), told me that she began picking on the “27th of September and we picked very slowly and deliberately all the way up to the 16th of October. There was a great deal of sorting necessary and our net yields were very small due to all of the fruit we discarded. I did a normal vinification because the fruit that we kept was quite ripe so there was no reason not to extract what was there. I did reduce the percentage of new wood a bit but not really materially. The malos were quite extended and the aeration from the transfer to the pre-bottling holding tanks did a great deal of good.” After a disappointing group of 2007s, these 2008s are only a mild improvement and while Gros explained that she reduced the wood somewhat for 2008, it remains quite prominent, at least at this early stage. (Various importers including Atherton Wine Imports, www.awiwine.com, Atherton, CA, North Berkeley Imports, www.northberkeleyimports.com, Berkeley, CA, Michael Skurnik Wines, www.skurnikwines.com, Syosset, NY and Vintner Select, www.vintnerselect.com, Cincinnati, OH; Laytons, www.laytons.co.uk, UK, Lay & Wheeler, www.laywheeler.com, UK, Lea & Sandeman, www.leaandsandeman.co.uk, UK, Howard Ripley, www.howardripley.com, UK and Adnams, www.adnams.co.uk, UK).
Tasting note: Here the wood toast is more subtle if by no means invisible with an attractively layered and fresh nose of spicy purple fruit aromas that lead to solidly rich, full and tautly muscled flavors that are not particularly big or powerful by the usual standards of this wine but there is beautiful balance and focus. This should mature over the medium-term, which is to say 5 to 8 years earlier than what I usually suggest.
